Retrofitted for a sustainable future

From its past as an industrial hub, Berlin/Vallila has emerged as a sustainable space where businesses, people and the environment can thrive. If reducing your carbon footprint is important to your business and company culture, you’re sure to feel at home here.

Part of a buzzing community

🐝 How great are bees? They help many plants pollinate and are a crucial part of the ecosystem. HumbleBee Housing Project is bringing these hard workers all around the metropolitan area of Helsinki. This initiative shows creative entrepreneurship that perfectly fits Berlin/Vallila! They are providing new and exciting solutions to complex problems and offering companies a chance to be a part of the important work.

While a standalone beehive will pollinate its immediate surroundings and is compelling in its own right, its overall impact is relatively confined. Beekeeping done right will, however, enrich the local ecology for kilometers around the hive. A networked beekeeping approach directly supports 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations.¹

We are proud and honored to host a community of bees on the roof of our building, and support this great project! As a sweet bonus, we will also get some honey produced by the bees to use as company gifts. 🍯

It all starts with
the building

By renovating existing buildings we can save a huge amount of materials and emissions compared to building something new. This sustainable action is the base for everything that we are creating at Berlin/Vallila.

The real estate sector has a huge role in reducing carbon emissions as one-third of Europe’s carbon emissions come from real estate. We want to make a big impact by doing our part. We’re proud of how Berlin/Vallila has been designed to be sustainable, and we hope our tenants are too.

So, what have we done? With a team of dedicated experts and the latest technology, we have reduced the building’s carbon footprint to a bare minimum. This means the building will use only carbon-free energy for electricity and heating. And by doing this, the amount of emissions we can save every year equals that of 5000 cars!

Naturally warm, naturally bright

The thick brick walls help keep Berlin/Vallila warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Berlin/Vallila produces over 80 % of the energy needed to heat the building with carbon-free heat pumps. The remaining 20 % is produced with emission-free circular heating, so no demons there either. Combined, these solutions make Berlin/Vallila top of the class in energy efficiency.

The building’s large windows let in plenty of natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting. When the sunlight isn’t enough, smart LED lights will keep things nice and bright while reducing the building’s energy consumption. These brilliant lights use AI to recognize when they’re needed and when they’re not. And because they simulate natural daylight, they help support your natural biorhythm as you go through your day.

LEED the way

LEED is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings. It rates a property’s environmental, social and economic sustainability performance and certifies those that make the grade. As a LEED-certified property, you can be sure that Berlin/Vallila is a sustainable environment where your people, company and planet will thrive.

Easy to come
and go

Just a short ride by bike, scooter or public transport to downtown Helsinki and the neighbouring areas of Pasila, Kallio and Kalasatama, commuting to and from Vallila is a breeze.

Many of the city’s main tram and bus lines run near or through Vallila, making it easy to reach from virtually anywhere in and around Helsinki. And the new Pasila transportation hub is also within walking distance, with all local and regional trains making the stop.

Biking is also made even easier with on-site facilities designed with cyclists in mind. There are plenty of easy-access bike racks, showers and changing rooms, and more. And the cycling facilities will be certified in line with international standards.
